SIF Technologies’ diverse solutions can also be applied in the logistics sector. We are currently in collaboration with one of the world’s largest oil rig and ship building company to complete the first chemical free ballast water treatment system.
Problems Faced
Ballast is any material used to weight and/or balance an object. Ballast water is therefore water carried by ships to ensure stability, trim and structural integrity. When a ship is empty of cargo, it fills with ballast water. When it loads cargo, the ballast water is discharged. However, ballast water may contain harmful aquatic organisms and species which will upset ecological balance and become detrimental to marine life. It is important that alternative, effective ballast water management and/or treatment methods are developed as soon as possible, to replace reballasting at sea. Options being considered include:
Mechanical treatment methods such as filtration and separation.
Physical treatment methods such as sterilisation by ozone, ultra-violet light, electric currents and heat treatment.
Chemical treatment methods such adding biocides to ballast water to kill organisms.
Various combinations of the above.
However, all these method currently require significant further research effort and there are difficulties in using the mentioned technologies to manage huge quantities of ballast water carried by large ships. In addition, treatment options must not interfere unduly with the safe and economical operation of the ship and must consider ship design limitations. Any control measure that is developed must meet a number of criteria, including:
It must be safe
must be environmentally acceptable
It must be cost-effective
It must work
Solutions
To mitigate the problem, SIF Technologies can offer a chemical free solution to help ships inhibit the level of bacteria and control the growth of parasite in ballast water. According to industry experts from a leading fish aquarium in Singapore, there has been no incidence of water parasites in the past 6 months since DPA system has been installed in their water circulation systems. Similar technologies can be applied to marine and offshore processes to help clients manage the discharge of ballast water, while ensuring that environmental compliance is met.
Packing Water for Transport of Live Fish
Leading exporters of ornamental fish in Singapore has also adopted SIF Technologies’ solutions to help them in their logistics and transportation needs. When aquatic livestock needs to be exported to foreign markets, they need to be packaged and transported over an extended period of time. DPA system provides an effective solution to increase stocking density of the livestock and substantially reduce the death on arrival (DOA) at destination.
